The German Cancer Research Center (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum, DKFZ) with more than 2,500 members of staff is the largest biomedical research institute in Germany. More than 1,000 scientists are investigating the evolution of cancer, cancer risk factors and new strategies for cancer prevention. They are developing more precise means to diagnose tumors and more successful cancer treatments. Jointly with Heidelberg University Hospital, DKFZ has established the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg. At NCT, promising approaches from basic cancer research are translated into clinical application. The staff of the Cancer Information Service (KID) offers information about all aspects of the disease of cancer for patients, their families, and the general public. The center is a member of the Helmholtz Association of National Research Centers.
