The Autonomous Robot Laboratory (AR Lab) was established in 2000 and is directed by Prof. Weidong Chen to provide advanced facilities for the research and development of robotics. The mission of the lab is to conduct the basic research related to mobile robot, robotic manipulators, collective robotics and computer vision, etc., and to explore novel applications of robot technologies in medical service, health care, and our daily life.

The department of electrical engineering of SJTU originates from the technical college of electrical engineering in 1908. It has a first-class-discipline mobile station for postdoctoral research which was nationwide outstanding. The discipline covers the following five sub-disciplines, electric power systems and automation, high voltage and insulation technology, electric machines and electric apparatus, power electronics and power drives, theory and new technology of electrical engineering.

Institute of Design and Control Engineering for Heavy Equipment was founded in April 2007 in order to focus on the design and theoretical research of huge and high payload equipment such as large manipulators and equipment for nuclear power plants. The main research fields are: design and application of parallel Robots and heavy payload manipulating Equipment; humanoid robots and micro-manipulating robots; the optimization design and key technologies of huge payload press; design and manufacturing of the equipment in nuclear power plants; simulation technologies of nuclear power plants; application of nuclear technology.

National Engineering Laboratory for Automotive Electronic Control Technology was set up in 2008, focusing on innovative researches in automotive electronic control technology to meet the national demands of energy-saving and emission-reduction, automotive industry upgrading, breakthrough of bottleneck technologies in powertrain system control, chassis control and active safety, vehicle bus-system and body electronics. Based on the application technology of engine, transmission, motor, battery, National Engineering Laboratory is aimed to fully grasp the fundamental key technologies such as actuators, sensors, integrated circuits; and the common core technologies such as standard software architecture and embedded real-time operating system, etc.

Our Researches mainly focus on CNC control of EDM and wire EDM systems, intelligent control of EDM processes, EDM processing technologies. We have undertaken many great projects. We also have close collaborations with research institutes and enterprises on projects aiming to develop and implement new non-traditional manufacturing technologies.

Power Transmission and Power Conversion Control Key Laboratory (PT&PCC lab) belongs to School of Electronic Information and Electrical Engineering, which mainly focuses on industry automation, high-power electric drive and control, new energy conversion systems, power transmission, key technologies of Ultra-High Voltage power transmission. It works on a number of projects for design and development, alteration, installation, commissioning and maintenance, which include National 863 Project. It achieved good results in industrial controls, wind power, electric power, and other industries.
