The Italian Institute of Technology began its scientific activity in 2005 to develop frontier research in strategic fields for the industrial development of Italy and for the international scientific community. Today IIT has about 900 employees from 30 different countries. Most of the researchers are based in Genova, with laboratories distributed over 2 robotics departments, 2 life-science oriented departments and 3 facilities of Nanotechnologies. During 2009, to reinforce the activities of IIT in specific fields, 9 additional laboratories were established countrywide.
